How does a gastric balloon SURGERY?
The gastric balloon is a less invasive weight loss method that does not require surgery. In this procedure, a soft balloon filled with liquid or air is inserted endoscopically through the mouth into the stomach. Once in the stomach, the balloon is inflated to take up space and promote an earlier feeling of fullness. This causes the patient to eat less food and thus lose weight.
The gastric balloon is placed under light sedation and usually takes only 20 to 30 minutes. The balloon stays in the stomach for about 6 to 12 months and is then removed. As this is a non-surgical procedure, there are no incisions, scars or permanent changes to the digestive tract.
While the balloon is in the stomach, patients need to adjust their eating habits and lifestyle. A proper diet and regular exercise are crucial for the success and sustainability of weight loss.
